TYT is probably best known for their TH-9800 Quad Band Radio, which hit the market in late 2013. I was one of the original importers of this radio and have sold a few hundred of them since that first shipment.
TYT’s first attempt at a DMR radio has been a huge success. With the larger color screen, improved audio quality and great receiver, all for under $200, it makes this little HT a very easy way to step into DMR.
Several firmware updates have been released since making this first video, and the FPP (front panel programming) feature is now working on this radio. This video demonstrates one of the very first MD380s that I received, which is several firmware versions ago.
The sales of this radio have been very good. Everyone has been quite happy with it, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into DMR. For users in the Texas, Oklahoma or Arkansas areas, I keep an updated Codeplug on my website with the latest contacts for all 3 States. Take this codeplug, add-in your repeaters and talkgroups, and you will be good to go. I’m planning to do a programming video soon, so be watching for that in an upcoming episode.
