Episode 89: Unboxing the QYT KT7900D Quad-Band Mini-Mobile Radio

QYT KT7900D Quad Band Mini-Mobile Radio

I found this KT7900D radio on one of the Facebook groups that talks about Chinese radios for Amateur use.  At first, I thought it was just a dual-band with 220MHz receive, but when I inquired about it on this same Facebook group, I was told that it would transmit on 220.  When I read this, I had to get one and try it – I am always on the look-out for new 220 gear.

This radio is only about $88 from Amazon.  It transmits about 20 watts on each band, high power.  The sound quality is alright, not fantastic, and the mic is very hot.  Take a look at the video and let me know what you think.  Honestly, for the price of the radio, I think it is worth it.

  1. I bought one of these a couple of months ago for the same reason, 220. It works very well for what it is.
Average output is about 18 watts which is sufficient on simplex, what the 350 band is in there for who knows? 350-390 is designated for military in the U.S. with 360 being the am uplink for the Navy….so operating in there is out. Still trying to figure if I can get into that chip and program am on 260.

  2. Did you ever figure out how to speed up the transition from transmit to receive so you can hear the full squelch tail? Mine is doing the same thing and it’s bad enough that it cuts people off. Looked through the manual and didn’t find anything, though it’s not very clear so it might have been in there and I just missed it. It’s not obvious in the programming software either.

73 and thanks for your useful show!

      1. I thought I saw that and tried it but maybe not. Possibly I forgot to turn it off on the 220 band?? It seems to work fine on the other bands. In any case, thanks. I’ll give it a try.

  3. Sorry about sending a second version of the same thing. I came back to the site and didn’t see my reply and assumed I forgot to hit “submit.” I see now that it was awaiting moderation. Feel; free to delete this one. Sorry.
